What to do on a cold Memorial Day weekend

So, its going to be cold in the Midwest for Memorial Day weekend. You guys act like that is a surprise or something! I can count on one hand how many nice Memorial Day weekends we’ve had. But every year, people persist in planning camping, boating, swimming and such. Sigh… I do remember plenty of wet cold Memorial Day weekends. Don’t ask me to go camping on Memorial day – Not going!

On our local radio station this morning, they were saying that we should have a repeat Thanksgiving dinner. Now that’s an idea!

Baking is another good idea. You won’t want to do that once it does get hot, like probably next weekend. Bake a bunch of cookies and stash them in the freezer.

There’s tons of garage sales this weekend. While it will be cool, it won’t be too cold to enjoy some garage sales. Or have a garage sale yourself. Or go antiquing.

Since it will be cooler, you can plan activities that will get people moving – softball, baseball, frisbee, frisbee golf, horse shoes, bean bag toss, volleyball, badminton, even croquet is coming back!

And the cooler weather is great for sitting around a fire. Who doesn’t love that? Add s’mores for good measure…

Hit the library Friday and pick up some movies to have on hand.

Play cards. Uno is still fun. So are Yatzee and charades.

Or we could all head somewhere warmer. I hear its going to be in the 70s in Indiana.

What am I doing? Since everyone will be gone, I’m going to try and get the carpet upstairs cleaned. I know, I’m a sick girl. My daughter is going camping with friends.

Then there is a fund-raising dinner for the lake on Sunday. I’m a volunteer for that every year. Its usually earlier in May, and we have had great weather the last couple of years. I hope they move it inside this year…

Members, don’t forget to login and pick up some easy grilling recipes, and salads, and side dishes. The nice thing about it being cooler is that you don’t have to worry about things melting and wilting. It expands your food options!

Some barbeque favorites are Broccoli Salad, Grilled Peppers, Chips and Salsa, Baked Beans, Coleslaw, Potato Salad, and Carrot Salad. OK, carrot salad is not really a favorite. I like it. 😉 We have a bunch of different recipes! There’s 5 or 6 different potato salad recipes in there.

Don’t forget to put out fresh fruit too!

Everyone says they don’t like healthy food. But then when you put this stuff out, they eat it all up! Potato salad is not the best diet choice, but when its made fresh – its less fattening and you know exactly what’s in it. No chemicals or artificial junk. So while you might have hot dogs and brats, you can still stuff them full of healthy stuff too!

I’ve got to go finish those 8 dishes in the sink so I can go to bed. (You know the rules…) Busy day tomorrow.

Whatever you do this weekend – have fun and be safe!

And pause for a moment to remember the soldiers that died so you have the freedom to do what you want this weekend.

And say a prayer for those who are without homes, or water, or food in the areas hit by tornadoes. Help them if you can.

OK, I’ve got to get done and get to bed. Have a good one!
