The peace of being unplugged

unpluggedWe all complain that we don’t have enough time. It’s really not true.

I don’t have TV. I thought that was pretty smart. Turns out, it’s not smart enough.

Last week, my Internet went down. I called AT&T. As part of the troubleshooting I had to disconnect the house phone. After a couple of hours of the girl working on it from her computer, the Internet was working – but we hadn’t finished and my cell phone died. So I reconnected the house phone. Now nothing worked.

It was a very weird feeling.

Now, I have to say that it was a very pleasant experience dealing with a tech in Michigan. Long, but pleasant. And she tried everything. Her solution was that since I was having trouble, they would move me to UVerse. My monthly charges would be less, and they would not charge me installation or equipment. Sounded like a good deal.

The install was scheduled for Saturday. So, I would be without phone or Internet for 3 days.

Do you  know how much extra time that gives you? Unreal!

I did have to go to my neighbor’s house to check emails, but I wasn’t going to sit on her computer all night like I do my own.

It was so disconcerting. What did we used to do with our time before all this ‘time saving’ technology!

So, the installer came on time. When he opened the box on the outside of the house, it was full of wasp nests! He thought he had found the problem, but it wasn’t to be. There was still something wrong on the line. It appeared that my line goes underground, up the hill, across the street, and over to the pole. It would take a bucket truck.

I finally got to finish the second season of Big Bang that my neighbor had loaned me weeks ago.

They fixed the line the next morning, but now we had to reschedule the install. Oh brother. It took a full week in total. All is working fine now.

But it really was an eye opener. I don’t have a smart phone, so I am not connected as much as other people, and still I ended up with hours of time.

Now I will be paying more attention to how much time is productive, and how much is screwing around. We all need to screw around a little, but geez! No wonder I always felt like I never had enough time.

Try unplugging for a couple days and see. It’s amazing.

I take tech breaks from the internet fairly regularly. Some I plan ahead of time, some I just feel the need to all of the sudden and so take one, and once in a while the internet and VOIP connection go down together due to bad weather or technical issues with my ISP or equipment.

I’ve mostly enjoyed the breaks, though at first it took some getting used to- I did have withdrawal pains! Now I have myself believing that I don’t have to respond to everything or immediately. I know that there are other things in my life that need doing or that I want to do to have a healthy balance.

For years I’ve had a pay as I need it cell phone which is only used when I travel, and not very much even then. I’ve had time to watch how glued people are to their cell phones so even though I may come into the modern age within the next year and get an actual cell phone with a regular monthly plan I already know that I don’t want it to rule my time.
